Homes of the General Manager and SuperIntendent
I want to thank Mary Legg Stevenson for her photos we see below from the Spencer Fork Coal Co mining operation. These will appear in her republishing of From Affinity to Winding Gulf due out soon. If you take a look at these photos, you start to see right away who lived in nicer homes and who was "in charge". While the Sterling Smokeless Operation was not to come into Whitby until the 30's, the Supervisors/Superintendents house was an enduring fixture within Whitby. Currently,(2004) the house still stands and you can see what I saw in August of 2003 here.
